This example illustrates how you should create a user account. You may want to print this page out, or open it in a new browser window so you can reference it while you follow the steps. You can also click on the "?" on the toolbar to return to this page.
- Your UserName will be your English name (Dictionary:capitalized), with your class (ClassA, ClassB, or ClassC) added at the front. For example, this user's name is "New User", and it's in Class Z (it's English is much worse than yours), so its UserName is ClassZNewUser.
- You will not be able to edit anything until you log in (Dictionary:log+in). Log in with your UserName and the Dictionary:password given to you in class as the Administrator Password in [Preferences]. Press Enter.
- Go to the SandBox and edit some text. Get familiar with the Wiki editing system. Here are some tips:
- To make a new paragraph, add a blank line between two lines of text.
- Try typing "----" on a line. Save the change. What does it show up as?
- You can create larger text by adding "= " (Dictionary:equals+sign) before the text and " =" after the text. Notice that there must be a blank space after the first equals sign, and a blank space before the second.
- A link is created whenever you type a UseMod:WikiWord. A WikiWord is "any word which contains at least two upper case letters, separated by at least one lower case letter."
- All of the pages in a Wiki are just hypertext documents. There is nothing special about any given page. Remember this!
- Create a UserName entry in UsualUsers by editing the page, and inserting into the list Dictionary:alphabetically. Don't forget to WordNet:indent your entry by putting a ":" (WordNet:colon) at the beginning of the line, before your UserName.
- A link to new page always appears as a "?" (Dictionary:question+mark). Edit your personal page by clicking (Dictionary:mouse+click) on the "?" next to your UserName entry in UsualUsers, and write a short description of yourself or a funny Dictionary:anecdote. Also create a link (Dictionary:hyperlink) to your "mailbox", which for the UserName BinoBino is BinoBinoBox (the UserName with "Box" added to the end). Remember, your mailbox is really just another page that you encourage others to edit.
- You may want to go back to UsualUsers to add a link to your mailbox next to your homepage link.
- Leave a message in another user's personal mailbox. Sign the message with the date AND your mailbox. This will make it easy for them to reply to your message. For example: "I think you're really hot! Wanna go on a date? (2004.2.22, BinoBinoBox)" DO NOT ERASE MESSAGES OTHER PEOPLE HAVE WRITTEN. YOU MUST RESPECT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE WRITE. ONLY THE "OWNER" OF THE MAILBOX SHOULD ERASE OLD MESSAGES.
- Go to the TopicTree and explore the notes written so far. Spend some time understanding how they are organized. Do some review and take note of what you don't understand. How do they compare to your class notes?
- Try using the LookUp bar at the top or bottom of any page. Enter English into the first and/or third input fields, or enter Chinese into the second. Make sure the blinking Dictionary:cursor is in the input field, and press Enter to submit your search. What happens in each case?
- Type the following into the "Wiki Search" bar at the bottom of any page, and press Enter. What happens? How does using \W (Dictionary:backslash followed by an uppercase "W") affect your search?
- trying
- try
- try\W
- \Wtry
- \Wtry\W
- Go back to the homepage (EnglishWiki) and explore both CommentCorner? and LanguageLab. Notice that you can edit the UseMod:SubPages. Ask a question in CommentCorner? about something you don't understand. Write a sentence in LanguageLab using a vocabulary word you've learned recently.
- Leave a message of 3-5 sentences in BinoBinoBox saying what your impressions of this Wiki are. You must do this to get credit for this homework. Sign the message just like you did before (with the date AND your mailbox). Remember, don't erase existing messages!
- Finally, log out on the [Preferences] page. Clear (erase) the UserName and Administrator Password fields, and press Enter.
Make sure you log in before making any edits! (And don't forget to log out!)
