- We went over a simple approach to preparing for a speech. In addition to these pointers, also be aware of the performance and presentation tips introduced in MMIVSpringWeekTwo.
- These are the things which you the students said were bad about the Guilin speech contest. If we want to give a successful speech, we have to correct these problems!
- Bad, Boring Topics
- Competition Gave Event a Bad Taste
- Speakers Didn't Use Body Language
- Audience Didn't Enjoy the Speeches
- Prepare a very very short speech outline. In the end, it's really unimportant that you memorize your speech; in fact, memorizing it is also certain to make the speech feel dull and lifeless. A speech outline will save you the embarrassment of forgetting a crucial part of your speech, as well as give you the freedom to talk about things you didn't think of ahead of time. How should we create a simple speech outline?
- Make notes brief and omit unimportant words. Many ideas will naturally come to mind when you read your notes. Thus, much content is WordNet:implicit, rather than WordNet:explicit.
- Start with a simple tree of ideas as shown in class. For example, choose a good topic, something which you are interested in and which you think will interest others. Then, think of two or three subtopics. Finally, for each subtopic, write down three details which you will be sure to discuss.
- Here's an example we came up with in Class C:
- What is money?
- Appearances, forms, kinds
- History
- Looks, feels, smells, tastes like
- Kinds (varieties); does it LOOK like money?
- What can/can't you buy with it?
- Exchange for goods and services
- Value: can be different depending on where you are!
- Can't buy health, happiness, love
- Remember why you are giving a speech. It's not for yourself; it's for other people! So if other people don't understand what you say, become bored, and fall asleep, you've failed in making your speech intelligible and interesting! Just because you feel like you've done a good job doesn't mean you actually have!
- Make the audience feel involved! Saying something they don't expect to hear will get their attention, so say something crazy or outrageous! Even tell a lie! (Although let them know you were kidding afterward!)
- Finally, you all had another EnglishWiki assignment having to do with our wonderful Guilin trip. Did you finish it?
- Describe 2 people you met in Guilin. Don't use the words: lively, handsome, beautiful, clever, humorous. At least 1 person must be a foreigner (not Bino or Rob).
- What activity did you like most? What activity did you like least? Why?
- If you took your parents to Guilin, what activities would you plan for them?
